Welcome to my personal website.
My name is Wang Can, currently a postdoc of Tongji University (China) and MIT (US). For many years I have been learning and researching in the major of urban planning. It is common that people view this major as something strongly based on inspiration and aesthetic perception, however, what interests me most, is how to make use of data and quantitative methods to deepen our understanding of cities and support decision-making in urban planning. Consequently, I have kept improving myself with related methods, including but not limited to statistics, geographic information system (GIS), machine learning & deep learning, choice models, social network analysis, and transportation models. I am glad to discuss with you about applications of these methods in urban planing, as well as other interesting things.
Currently, my research is focusing on spatial behavior analysis and pedestrian simulation. My doctoral dissertation devotes to integrate variety of methods to support commercial space evaluation and design, based on description, explanation, and simulation of consumers’ spatial behavior. In the future, I am also willing to explore more in the field of big data, which I have entered since 2014 when our team acquired a set of mobile phone signaling data. Besides, in my master’s period, I was studying traffic impact assessment of land-use plans, thus interaction between transportation and land-use is also my research interest.
In my spare time, I like watching films, reading fictions, and travelling around. I am also a big football fan.
